McKinnon wants to help inspire more Australians, particularly those who have already made an important contribution to our nation in other fields, to see politics as the pinnacle of service and impact. We want to help build the talent pool of high calibre, capable political leaders. We want to help lower or remove barriers to people considering serving our nation through politics. And we want to help ensure Australia’s full spectrum of professional experience and talent is represented in all of our parliaments.
Aimed at individuals from fields such as business, health, law and the community sector, the program supports those whose careers have given them leadership experience, but who increasingly feel drawn toward political service and democratic leadership.
The program is particularly suited to major-party aligned individuals who see political service not simply as a career transition, but as an opportunity to build a meaningful legacy through service to community and country.
Next Horizon equips talented professionals with the knowledge, skills, networks and resilience required for political leadership.
Developed by experienced practitioners and experts, the curriculum provides practical insight into how political leadership works in Australia and how participants can navigate pathways into public life through the major parties.
The program is structured around three core themes: Political Foundations, which explores Australia’s institutions, parties and decision-making processes; My Political Leadership, focused on values, vision and leadership for public impact; and The Life of an MP, which prepares participants for the pressures, scrutiny and sustainability challenges of political life. The course will be delivered through a series of immersive events led by world-class political, policy and leadership experts.
